Write To Sell: 3 Tips For Ghostwriting Fiction

If you love writing fiction, you can build a great career writing for others as a ghostwriter. Ghostwriting brings an inflow of cash so that you have time to write your own novels.

An experienced ghostwriter will expect upwards of $20,000 per book. Even relatively new authors can earn upwards of $10,000 per book.

Although ghostwriting is common in nonfiction publishing, it’s only in the past few years that it’s also become common in fiction publishing.

Novelists are discovering that their words are worth money.

Ghostwriting: your words are worth money

Today, with top selling novels on Amazon earning five figures a day, new publishers hire ghostwriters who are paid by the project. Some of these new publishers manage a large stable of authors, specializing in various genres. They publish novels and series under many pen names.

Their authors sign nondisclosure agreements, and once the authors are paid, they no longer have any rights in their novels.

These new publishers resemble old-style book packagers. They produce hundreds of novels, hiring writers, editors, designers and marketers as needed.

I asked my students who’ve taken ghostwriting gigs for some practical tips to help you to get into this lucrative business.

1. Specialize in a genre: romance and mysteries are the most popular

A student said: “you need to know what’s selling and be comfortable writing in hot-selling genres.”

Another student said that in one sub-genre of romance six out of the ten top selling novels have been developed by a publisher hiring ghostwriters.

She was approached to ghostwrite a series in this sub-genre, but turned down the offer for now because she’s busy with her own books.

2. Be professional: advertise your services

If you’re looking for ghostwriting gigs, you need to promote your services. Ads on LinkedIn worked for a couple of authors, and Facebook groups worked for others.

3. Vital: study your contracts carefully

When you’re writing as a ghostwriter, you’ll be asked to sign nondisclosure agreements. You’ll also agree to relinquish all rights in your work once you’ve been paid.

One author told me that she found that this helped her as a writer. “My name will never be attached to that novel, so I found that I was much more relaxed and confident when I was writing. The experience enhanced my creativity which made me a better writer; I didn’t expect that.”

3 Beginner Tips For Your Self-Publishing Blog

Want to start a self-publishing blog? Advertising costs are up and I’ve received many questions about starting a blog to market your books.

In this post, we won’t be talking about WordPress and brand colors and similar trivia. It’s not important. Consider that you’re blogging to sell books, so 1001 blog visitors oohing and ahhing about your pretty blog are 100% useless.

Let’s start at the beginning. Do you need a blog?

Do you need a blog for your self-publishing business?

The short answer is: no, you don’t. There are many ways to market your books.

Moreover, blogging is tricky, because authors are by nature shy. I’ve looked at author blogs where the author makes no attempt at all to sell his books — unless you’re psychic you’d have no idea the author had books to sell.

Your self-publishing blog MUST be a sales tool.

Luckily, you can sell on your blog quite painlessly. This article, Blogging for Authors: Increase Reader Engagement and Sell More Books, suggests:

• Ask for the Sale. At the bottom of each blog post, mention your book and include a link to purchase.
• Share on Social Media. Share each new blog post across your social media networks. Include the post title with a link to continue reading on your site.

If you’ve decided that you’d like to create a blog, these tips will help.

1. Take ten minutes and create an “index card” business plan

The more you know about your goals, the better. That said, your business plan can and must be simple. I love this one from Susan Hyatt:

I wanted to map out a business plan ASAP.

I grabbed a napkin and I wrote on the back:

COACHING BUSINESS

Network your ass off.

Start with 8 clients a week at $125 per session.

4 workshops a year.

Start a blog.

Get on local TV.

2. Your blogging persona: who are you?

You need to decide who you'll be as a blogger. What image will you project? Be yourself of course, but decide how much personal information you'll share. If your blog's all-business, you won't be talking about your partner, or the movie you saw last night.

Choose a couple of audience personas too. These are the book-buyers for whom you'll be creating content. Personas work because once you’ve got a couple of personas, you’re no longer talking to air; you’re talking to real people.

Give each persona a name and a mini-bio. For example: “Melinda is 32 years old. She's been married for 6 years. Her reading happens during her lunch hour and at bedtime. Her son is six months old and she’s just returned to her day job from maternity leave. She and her husband want to….” etc.

When you're creating blog content, you're speaking directly to Melinda.

3. When you’ve got something to say, say it on your blog

Keep the bulk of your book marketing content on your blog, rather than on Facebook et al. However, be aware that there’s not an immediate correlation between your blog posts and book sales. Your blog’s visitors won’t magically turn into buyers immediately. Your audience will build slowly.

When you want instant sales, advertise. Advertising on Amazon, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest is becoming more expensive, so expect to spend more than seems to make sense.

A couple of days ago I chatted with an author who told me that he’s spending more on AMS than he’s getting back in sales. It’s worth it to him for now, because he’s building visibility.

However, a big ad spend isn’t sustainable longterm. The biggest benefit of a self-publishing blog is that it’s sustainable, and your sales increase over time.

Fiction Writing: How To Entertain Your Readers

Fiction is entertainment and unfortunately, as a fiction author, you’ve got lots of competition for your readers’ attention. How do you drag your readers away from video games and from Netflix binge-watching sessions?

You can only do that when you focus on the entertainment you’re providing readers.

Fiction is entertainment: what entertains YOU?

Start with yourself. Make a list of what you find entertaining in your own reading. Also, get into the habit of highlighting interesting material. If you use a Kindle or the Kindle app on your device, Amazon helpfully collects everything you’ve highlighted in a book onto a Notes and Highlights page.

When you read an especially entertaining scene, think about how the author managed to maintain your attention — what kept you reading?

These tips may help.

1. Use suspense in every scene

Suspense keeps readers reading.

Anticipation builds suspense. Avoid giving readers too much information — give them what they need to know when they need to know it. Delay giving information, and delay some more, to build the reader’s anticipation, and suspense.

The more you can delay, without annoying the reader, the better. For example, let’s say you’re writing a thriller in which your main character’s daughter is kidnapped. The daughter’s boyfriend has disappeared. Is he involved in the kidnapping? You may decide that he isn’t, but you don’t reveal that for four chapters.

2. Increase the stakes for your main characters

What will happen to your novel’s main character if he doesn’t get what he wants? Can he survive?

Your answer must be NO. Your main character must win through, or die. If his life goes on much as it did before, win or lose, then the stakes in your novel aren’t high enough.

Create a logline for your novel:

You must know what you're selling, so selling your book starts with a one sentence summary, much like a movie’s logline:

When INCITING INCIDENT happens, OUR PROTAGONIST decides TO DO ACTION against ANTAGONIST.

Think about novels you’ve read. What are the stakes?

Consider Pride & Prejudice, for example. Midway through the novel, Lizzie Bennet refuses Mr Darcy and sends him on his way.

Then Jane Austen raises the stakes for Lizzie. Lizzie visits Darcy’s magnificent home, Pemberley; her sister Lydia elopes with Wickham. Darcy owns Pemberley and rescues the entire family from ruin.

3. Remember to play

It’s impossible to be creative if you’re not having fun with your writing.

Play is the work of childhood—and it’s the work of your life as well. The great British child psychiatrist D.W. Winnicott was a virtuoso psychotherapist and brilliant theorist. He believed that play was essential to health, and that to help his clients play, whether they were children or adults, he needed to be able to play himself.

Think about how you could make your writing fun. It might be as simple as creating a music playlist, or rewarding yourself with a chocolate truffle when you finish a chapter.

Are you getting ready for a Christmas sales bonanza? Whether you’re a freelance writer or a self-publishing author, now’s the time to get ready. The holiday sales season starts in earnest in October and that’s mere weeks away.

Your actions over the next few months will set the stage for your best Christmas and year ever for your writing… (or not, if you fail to take advantage of the opportunities.)

Prepare now to make the holidays the happiest and best time of the year

I worked as a magazine writer for many years so I learned the importance of calendars, and the Christmas trading period. I tell my writing students that it’s never too late to get ready for the holiday season.

Major holidays are vital to all writers. These holidays include:

• Christmas;
• St Valentine’s Day;
• Halloween.

If you’re a freelancer, major holidays are both a challenge and a bonanza for your clients. They can become a bonanza for you too.

Self-publishing? Holidays are an opportunity for you to write themed novels and short fiction, as well as themed nonfiction.

1. Freelancer? Create holiday special offerings for clients

When I mention “offerings” I don’t mean price cuts. The habit of cutting prices is a fast route to a failed business for writers. You have expenses you must pay, as all businesses do. If you can’t pay those expenses, you’ll go broke.

By offerings, I mean services that you only offer during the holidays, or in the lead-up to a holiday period. The services you create will depend on the kind of writing you do, and on your clients. Brainstorm services you could offer in these lead-up months to Christmas.

If you’re not sure what you could offer, talk to your clients. Ask them how they’re increasing their holiday sales — what communications’ material will they need?

For example, many commercial websites send out daily mailings in December. You can offer to write them. You’ll often find that companies wish they could send out more sales offers, but don’t have the staff to handle it.

2. Self-publisher? Think SHORT: prepare your publishing and advertising schedule now

Hit the ground running. Create a publishing plan NOW. Aim to have at least one Christmas holiday themed book on sale no later than October, then keep writing and publishing your themed material.

3. Hustle! Call everyone, then call them again (and again)

To increase your writing income, you need to hustle, no matter what kind of writing you do. Commit to calling every client you’ve worked with in the past year, and then calling them again, if you’re a freelancer.

If you’re self-publishing, commit to publishing and advertising more during the lead-up to Christmas.

Tip: increase your prices, otherwise you won't be able to complete with big publishing houses. They'll price you out of the market -- they can afford it. Their books sell for much more than yours do.

New Author? How To Survive Writing Your First Novel

Writing your first novel is stressful — not only for you, but also for everyone around you. New authors’ moods tend to swing from elation to despair and back again, sometimes in the same day.

When I’m coaching a new novelist, I know that if the writer suddenly goes silent for a few days, they’re in a danger period. I contact the writer immediately and hope that they paid attention when I said: No matter how dreadful you think your writing is, don’t delete your book.

New authors are shocked by how messy the writing process can be, so in a moment of madness want to hit the delete key. (Presumably to remove the evidence.)

Hard as it may be, every author goes through days of hating their novel and wanting to delete the book from their computer and brain.

Every author hits the wall: take a break when it happens to you

After you’ve written several novels you realize that you’ll hit “the wall” at some stage with every novel. You’ve developed a visceral dislike of the novel. You’re convinced not only that nothing can save the book but also that it’s not worth saving.

You are WRONG.

All authors hate their book at some stage.

New author horror: you HATE your book

Writing a novel is messy; no matter how bad it looks, your novel is FINE. It’s supposed to be messy and chaotic.

Think about what happens when someone builds a house. There are several homes going up in our little town. I stroll past the building sites on my daily walk. These sites are messy. They start off with a big hole in the ground, then stuff gets put into the hole. Eventually the framework goes up... weeks or months later, there's a house, or several townhouses.

Writing your novel is much like building a house. You write and write, and what you're writing isn't much. It doesn't read like a book, does it? You read your favorite author, and the mess you've got can drive you to despair.

Take courage. Your ugly duckling will become a swan. Your mess will grow into a novel. Every word you write is important, even if you delete the word or the scene or the chapter a month from now, because it's only framework, and you don't need it.

Tips to help you to survive until you type “The End”

• Keep writing. Every day. No matter what. Your novel is growing. It may be ugly, but that's just a stage;
• Keep learning. Learn what makes a scene. Do you have conflict on every page? Are you bored? Spark it up;
• Keep reading. Read great novels. Read junk. Just read, every day. You'll learn a lot via osmosis;
• Get some exercise. Writing is stressful. Exercise gets rid of the stress hormones which can damage your health;
• Do your best today. And tomorrow. That's all you need to do.

Advertising For Writers: 3 Tips To Help

Today, advertising is essential for writers, but paid advertising is becoming more expensive.

For many writers and authors, this is a huge shock, especially if they’ve relied on Facebook. Why bother maintaining a blog, when Facebook offered a free service on which you could blog and build a community?

Advertising for writers: the free ride ends

Facebook has moved to a determined pay-to-play business model with its advertising fees rising and continuing to rise.

In 2018, all business users found that their content stopped appearing in their followers' newsfeeds. If they wanted their followers to see their content, they had to pay. Then they had to pay even more, as Facebook upped (and upped) the cost of advertising.

With both Facebook and Amazon raising their advertising prices, many writers and authors are wondering what to do.

These tips may help.

1. Marketing and advertising is a business expense: include it in your pricing

Self-publishing authors need to market and advertise. So do writers who sell services. And, just as any other business does, you must factor these expenses into your costs.

Estimate how much you need to spend on marketing, then raise your prices and fees to cover the expense.

2. Use social media: be patient

Look at marketing in general, and social media in particular, as a cumulative process. Just because no one’s bought your book in a week, after you posted on Twitter FIVE times, it doesn’t mean that no one’s seeing your tweets. (Try posting something stupid, and the instant response will provide a quick reality check. :-))

A reader may need to see mention of your book several times before he clicks through to your book’s product page on Amazon or elsewhere.

3. Indie author? Promote your books before publication day

Start promotions early.

Use as many free tools as possible, like KDP Pre-orders.

Avoid Fiction Disasters: Remove Exposition And Backstory In 3 Steps

Writing fiction? If you’re a new author, your biggest temptations are exposition and backstory. They’re tempting because you want to explain things to readers. Please don’t do that — you’re killing your novel.

Readers want entertainment, not explanations.

In an earlier post, we discussed beginning your novel, novella or short story with a first-sentence hook, and said:

Your novel’s first sentence must be a hook. Otherwise readers won’t read your second sentence.

Sadly, many new authors follow that strategy, then wreck their wonderful hook because they don’t trust readers.

You need to explain, don’t you?

NO, you don’t. When you explain, you throw away wonderful opportunities to keep readers reading.

Avoid explanations: you’re throwing away opportunities to create suspense

Authors “explain” when they use devices like exposition and backstory. (Backstory is anything that happened before your story starts.)

I’ve written about backstory hell before. Here’s what an author indulging in backstory looks like to readers.

• A scene starts. You settle down to read an enjoyable scene between two characters, then the author inserts…
• Backstory 1, of one of the characters…
• In the middle of backstory 1, you get backstory 2, the backstory of the other character…
• Finally the author remembers he’s writing a scene. So you get a snippet of the scene (by this time the reader’s head is spinning like a top). After just a few paragraphs of the scene, the author inserts…
• Something or other, which may be backstory, or maybe it’s a flashback, who knows?

Please don’t do that.

Keep your story moving FORWARD, always

Make it your goal to remove all author intrusions when you spot them. Keep your story moving forward.

These steps will help.

Step 1. Your first draft is your “story” draft: write quickly

You’ll eliminate exposition and backstory in later drafts. In your first draft, you’re discovering the story of your novel or novella. So just write, without editing.

Be messy. Your sole aim in your first draft is to get the story down and type: “The End.”

Step 2. After your first draft read-through, tag all instances of exposition and backstory

Leave your first draft for a day or two, then read it through. This first read-through is solely for story. Do you have a story? Can you create a logline?

You must know what you're selling, so selling your book starts with a one sentence summary, much like a movie’s logline:

When INCITING INCIDENT happens, OUR PROTAGONIST decides TO DO ACTION against ANTAGONIST.

During your second read-through, tag author intrusions like exposition and backstory.

Then…

Step 3. Delete backstory and exposition

Most of the time, you’ll be able to delete instances of exposition and backstory and instantly improve your story.

Occasionally, you’ll need to introduce information you’ve deleted or which is missing. Introduce this needed information via:

• A new scene, or even an entire subplot;
• Dialogue;
• A character’s thoughts.

Self-Publishing Basics: 3 Commonsense Ways To Sell More Books

Self-publishing today: “How can I sell more books?”

Whenever a writing student asks me that question I buckle down and do the research. What research, you’re wondering? Here you go.

You research the author’s:

• Audience;
• Published books (audience and blurb? Keywords? Categories? Etc.);
• Audience targeting;
• Macro and micro marketing methods to reach his audience…

Reality: selling books is complicated

Selling books is complicated. No one really knows what works for a specific book.

Consider that if anyone knew how to sell more books and could do it by throwing money at it, traditional publishers would only publish bestsellers.

They’d never have books which just don’t sell. Think of the money they’d make. Instead, traditional publishers do what self-publishing authors do: they publish a lot of books and hope some of them hit it big.

Sometimes books do hit it big, for both self-publishers and traditional publishers.

If you’ve asked the “How can I sell more books?” question, let’s look at some commonsense ways to sell more.

1. Know your audience: who are they? What do they read?

Every month, 50,000 new books hit the Kindle Store. That’s a lot of books. And, despite the immense competition, each and every month bestselling authors publish a new book and it becomes an instant bestseller. These authors rake in many thousands of dollars each week… They’re making more money than authors have ever made in the history of publishing.

How’s that possible?

In a word: audience.

Today it’s possible to reach readers no one could reach before. As long as you know who they are, you can reach the perfect audience for your book. Bestselling authors who sell more copies in an hour than others sell in a year hit the bulls-eye on their target audience.

Tip: think about genre. Who reads novels in the genre in which you’re writing? What tropes appeal to your genre?

Half an hour’s research can help you to define your book’s audience. This knowledge will not only make money for you, it will save you money too.

2. Develop a marketing message for your book and stick to it

If you’ve published several books you’ve received reviews which leave you scratching your head. What book did those readers read? It certainly wasn’t yours…

You must know what you're selling, so selling your book starts with a one sentence summary, much like a movie’s logline:

When INCITING INCIDENT happens, OUR PROTAGONIST decides TO DO ACTION against ANTAGONIST.

Read the above article and become familiar with loglines. When you develop a logline, you’re giving readers a reason to read. In essence, you’re developing a marketing message for your book.

A hard truth: if you can’t summarize a novel (or a nonfiction book) in a single compelling sentence, it won’t sell.

Tip: create a logline for the book you’re writing now.

3. Write and promote: keep writing and promoting

“Publish or perish” applies to academics — and to publishers, both traditional publishers and self-publishing authors.

“NEW” sells. Indeed, Amazon’s algorithm rewards it. So, as a self-publishing author, you need to keep writing, while promoting your books.

Traditional publishers have seasonal lists; self-publishers need them too.

Tip: create a publishing plan for the next 12 months. Stick to it.

And remember:

• Know your audience;
• Create loglines.

Write A Short Story In 5 Minutes A Day

As you may know, I’m a fan of writing and publishing short stories.

The reason’s simple: when I write a short story, I know it’s done within a few hours. Yes, there’s the cleanup phase: editing and proofing and finding a cover, but those are minor chores.

In a way, writing a short story is like writing blog posts; it’s (almost) instant gratification. You get an idea for a story, write it and publish it. Use your spare minutes; you can write in five minutes a day if that’s all the time you have.

Want to write a short story?

Try not to overthink writing a short story. Think of it this way — you’re creating fast and fun entertainment for readers.

We’re all busy. Few readers have hours in which they can read, but they have minutes. Write stories to distract your readers from their worries and problems for a few moments.

Try these simple steps.

1. Use what you have

Often, you can write a short story from materials you’ve got on hand:

• A scene you deleted from a novel;
• A character you removed from a draft;
• A novel which went nowhere. If you have a novel like this, why not try carving a couple of short stories from it?
• Ideas which won’t leave you alone… When you get an idea like this, write a story, even if it’s not in your primary genre, so the idea will stop bugging you.

2. Set a word count and a goal

Your story needs a fictional structure, with various elements, so that it’s satisfying to readers.

The phases/ elements:

• A setup phase (usually 25% of the word count)
• Rising action (obstacles)
• A turning point (the midpoint — at 50%)
• Your character fights back (50% to 95%)
• A climax (95%)
• A windup (just a couple of hundred words.)

You don’t need to structure a story precisely like this. Conflate phases if you like. It’s your story: write what entertains you. Chances are it will entertain readers too.

3. Write first, worry later

Can you write a short story (or any piece of fiction) in five minutes a day?

Of course you can. Write. Write whatever pops into your mind. Words develop more words.

Writing whatever’s in your head is a great habit to develop. Here’s why: stories will often come to you in bursts of inspiration.

If you’re writing a story in five minutes a day, you might spend five days (25 minutes) before you get an idea of what your story’s all about.

That’s fine. Your creative self, which gave you the bursts of inspiration will form them into a story.

Write. Five minutes a day.
