What will you write in 2015? In this series, let’s look at some options for writing jobs you may not have considered.
I’ve been helping students prepare for 2015. They want to grow their writing businesses, so I suggested that they learn copywriting.
Copywriting is sales writing; writing to persuade. With the development of advertising as content, copywriters’ projects now include material for sponsored content campaigns.
For any writer, the benefit of copywriting experience is that it helps all your writing.
The most common question I get about copywriting is: who will hire me?
The answer: clients are everywhere.
Getting your first copywriting job
Start local. You know your local environment, and your audience. The competition from other copywriters will be less. In some cases, you’ll need to educate your prospects about what a copywriter can do for them.
You’ll be amazed at what happens when you start talking about what you do, even in social, and other non-business situations.
When people ask you what you do, tell them: “I’m a copywriter. I write promotional materials."
One new copywriter got a gig from his accountant, another newbie got two from her hairdresser. One from the hairdresser herself, and the other from one of the haidresser's clients, a mortgage broker who happened to overhear the conversation in the salon.
As you can see from this, getting clients isn’t difficult, even if you’re just starting out.
Word of mouth is powerful
For some reason students keep silent about what they’re doing. Speak up! Tell friends, relatives, and work colleagues that you’re in copywriting. One gig leads to another, and another, and before you know it, you’ll have a dozen regular clients, and a full pipeline.
If you already have clients, some of them will need copy
A student completed our online copywriting course, and was doing well; I knew that he already had several clients when he completed his last lesson. Some months later, I came across a gig I thought he could do, and called him. He was snowed under with work, so he couldn’t take on the gig.
He said he hadn’t done any marketing at all, he just told his client list that he was taking on sales writing gigs. The floodgates opened.
