Have you created your own writing process? A process is a workflow, and it helps you to write more, and to sell more, every day. You don't need inspiration to write - discover what you do need, in this article.
Your Writing Process - a Workflow which Works
If you're a new writer, or are an established writer who's never developed a structure around your writing, you probably haven't thought about your workflow, but creating one is vital.
We'll get into some questions to ask yourself so you can develop a process/ workflow shortly.
Here's what my own writing workflow involves: a daily word count of NEW writing (done first thing in the morning, when I'm at my most creative); completing copywriting projects for clients; work with my students; and various marketing processes.
The goal of my workflow is to make writing enjoyable and fun - then I know exactly what I'm doing every day, and therefore I can relax, manage stress, and can become more creative.
Here are some useful questions to ask yourself to establish your own workflow - write down the answers.
1. What's Your Most Creative Time to Write?
Experiment. Everyone is more creative at certain hours of the day than at others.
Get up an hour earlier and try writing first thing in the morning; try writing late at night. When my children were small, late-night writing worked fine for me, now the early morning is my most creative time.
2. Have You Written a Brief for Your Current Project?
Even when you're writing for your own projects - an ebook or articles for a Web site for example - write a brief. A brief is a short description of your project. There's a lot involved in even the shortest writing project, so always work from a brief - it cuts down on procrastination.
3. How Much Money Do You Want to Make Each Month?
Write down a monetary goal - start small with $1000 a month, then aim for $2000 a month and so on. Here's the thing about monetary goals. You WILL achieve them if you write them down - and more quickly than you can imagine.
4. Have You Created Overall Goals, and Tasks to Help You to Achieve Them?
You need goals for your writing, and for the rest of your life too. For example, you must set health goals - you can't be productive if you're ill. So set goals for a healthy diet, and for exercise. Then create daily tasks to help you to achieve your goals - add the tasks to your calendar.
5. Have You Created Some Affirmations?
Whacky as they sound, affirmations work. Your subconscious mind needs instructions. If you don't provide them, the instructions will come from suggestions made to you by others, and by the media - this is not a good thing. Allowing yourself to be influenced by random suggestions leads to a chaotic life.
Create affirmations, and take charge of your life. I've got a nifty program on my Mac which allows me to create affirmations in many areas. It shows an affirmation every half hour or so. I'm barely consciously aware of them as they flash onto the screen, but I know my subconscious is aware of them.
Writers write. Creating a writing process which works for you means that you'll write more, and sell more... and you'll love your writers' life.
