Writers' Marketing Basics 1: ERR
In my daily interactions with writers I've found that marketing is hit and miss for most writers, and this is silly, because marketing is straightforward. It's not mysterious, and there's not much to learn.
If success as a writer means SALES to you, you need to become an expert at marketing your work and yourself.
Therefore, I've started a new series which may be useful to you. Here's Marketing Basics for Writers. :-)
There's one primary rule in marketing, and only one: repetition. My favourite marketing acronym is ERR.
ERR means:
E: Exposure
R: Recognition
R: Response
What does this mean to you in your marketing efforts?
It means that you need to remember that marketing is repetitive. Your buyers need to see your name often. There's a marketing truism that a buyer needs to see your name at least seven times before he buys from you. This is as true for your local pizza shop and a global corporation as it is for you, a humble wordsmith.
Sounds simple? It is. However the simplicity can be a trap. Writers are creative, and this means we abhor boring repetiton... and that's too bad. :-) We'll get into how you can make it repetition interesting in another post. In the meantime, remember ERR and think about how you can put ERR to use in your marketing.
You can also look up "Marketing" in the search engines, and study the material you find.
