Writing sucess: what is it for you?
I was chatting with a writing student this morning. She's been writing for ten years, and is still working on her first sale -- a long time to work without the feedback that publication gives.
The major benefit of publication (in any form) is that it gives you feedback, which will guide your growth as a writer toward whatever "success" means to you.
For example, over the past eight years I've been moving away from book publication toward online publishing. This is because book publishing can take around two years from the idea to the book on bookstore shelves, and since my own idea of success is getting lots of readers, online publication is the best way to achieve this -- I can write and publish an entry in this blog in around fifteen minutes. :-)
I suggested to my student that she take a couple of days to think about what she wants to achieve with her writing. You can do this too, if you're not sure what success means to you, ask yourself:
* What gives you the most pleasure in the writing process?
* What would you most like to write about?
* To describe your ideal day as a writer.
